Lew Tabackin's interest in music began in his hometown of Philadelphia, where he majored in flute at the conservatory. He moved to New York and was active for seven years performing as a saxophonist and flautist with his own trio and in the big bands of Clark Terry and Thad Jones-Mel Lewis, among others.

In 1968, Lew met Japanese pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi when they played in a quartet together. They married and moved to Los Angeles where they founded the ever-famous big band The Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra with Lew as principal soloist. He frequently performed with his own trios with, among others, Shelly Manne, Billy Higgins, John Heard and Charlie Haden and together with Toshiko Akiyoshi made frequent Japanese tours with the big band. In the 1980s he gained more and more recognition, including victories in Down Beat Magazine critics' and reader's polls.

In 1982 they moved back to New York where Lew became increasingly important in the Manhattan Jazz scene on tenor saxophone and flute. As a leader, he has recorded over 30 albums on the major record labels and has appeared on albums by Toshika Akiyoshi, Maynard Ferguson, Jimmy Knepper, Donald Byrd, Shelly Manne, The Manhattan Transfer, Tom Waits, Freddy Hubbard and many more.

Lew Tabackin was also a member of several all-star bands including George Wein's Newport All Star Band, The New York Jazz Giants, and The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. He is still very busy performing all over the world with his own ensembles and the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra.

It is a great opportunity to welcome him on our podium.

Philippe Aerts
double bass

Philippe Aerts (Brussels 1964) started playing guitar and bass as an autodidact at the age of 11. His father, an amateur bassist, gave him his first double bass when he was 14 and introduced him to the world of jazz. At 15 he played his first Dixieland concerts before focusing more on modern jazz and playing with the best musicians of the Belgian jazz scene (Charles Loos, Diederik Wissels, Michel Herr, Ivan Paduart, Steve Houben).

He works with many foreign musicians such as Joe Lovano, Steve Grossman, Joe Henderson and played at many festivals such as North Sea, Middelheim, Gaume, etc.

He is a member of the Philip Catherine Trio and the Ivan Paduart Trio. Together with saxophonist John Ruocco, he has his own trio with Tony Levin on drums and sometimes supplemented by trumpeter Bert Joris.

In 2002 he won the Django d'Or for best Belgian jazz artist.

Mourad Benhammou
Drums

Mourad Benhammou was born in Paris in 1969 into an Algerian family where music was unknown. He discovered jazz when he was 15 . Despite his father's objections, he managed to get hold of a drum set that he secretly practiced. He became a drummer without taking a single lesson. He was thus a completely self-taught artist based on three pillars, listening, speaking and playing. He listened to thousands of recordings of the great masters especially Elvin Jones and Philly Joe Jones.

He became a regular in Parisian clubs since 1992 and quickly learned from countless musicians including René Urtreger and Michel Grailler. In 2002 he plays a tribute to Thelonious Monk with Alain Jean-Marie and jean Bardy. Following the development of Sun Ra, he formed the Interplanetary Music Orchestra with Steve Potts and Alexandre Tassel, among others, which resulted in his first album as leader in 1998. He also played in Raphael Imbert's nonet with a tribute to Duke Ellington's The Sacred Music.

He is a much sought-after musician and plays with countless musical greats including Philip Catherine, Mark Whitfield and Lew Tabackin.
