Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957), seemed just as much of a child prodigy as Mozart: he was barely nine years young when he already delivered his cantata 'Gold'. Gustav Mahler was so enthusiastic about this that he promptly labeled the very young composer a 'genius'. In 1921 Korngold wrote his piano quintet in E (Op.15). A music critic of the composer's time, Emile Vuillermoz, wrote: 'this work is characterized by the youthful privilege of freshness, passion, generosity and seductive tenderness.'...
Gabriel Fauré (1845 - 1924), showed musical talent from an early age: at the age of nine his father sent him to the École Niedermeyer in Paris. Fauré excelled: he won prizes for solfège, piano, harmony, counterpoint and fugue. With the choral work Cantique de Jean Racine, which later became very famous, he won first prize in a composition competition at the school. The praises flew to the ears of the old Fauré in 1921. His second piano quintet, on which he worked for two years, was 'of unparalleled nobility', 'the pinnacle of his oeuvre'.
