Viper Mad is also the name of the new project by Bjorn Uyens, who previously caused a furore with Dress (intense guitar rock with a big blast of adrenaline) and Dassuad (atmospheric indie pop that evoked comparisons with dEUS and Sparklehorse). Together with his cousin Peter Sprengers, Bob Kuijl and Sjoerd van Helmond, he is taking a new direction. Irresistibly swinging, with a leading role for the smooth groove of the rhythm section instead of the guitars. Strong songs with catchy melodies still form the basis, but they sound completely different than before. The music has a different pace - no longer running fast or calmly in a car, but walking loosely through the city on a sultry summer evening.
It is an accessible, individual and recognizable sound - and so varied that you fall from surprise to surprise. Then again viciously bluesy, then again sweet poppy; seriously reflecting one moment, and as playful and mischievous the next moment as Serge Gainsbourg.

Uyens explains that the new sound came about organically when he participated in the traveling festival Popronde in 2013. "I played in sandwiches, cafes and churches, with an improvised band without a real drummer, but with beats and a drum. During that tour we started to play more and more swinging, because it caught on with the audience that did not know us. "After the Pop Round he started experimenting with electronic rhythms but found that too cold. "In the end I bought a handmade drum (with mallet and stick) and a tongue drum (sort of mini vibraphone), with which I started making beats. The emphasis on the first beat - which is so leading in rock and dance - was no longer there. That makes it swinging, sexy and earthy to play. And it creates more room for the story and the atmosphere. "

For him, musical sources of inspiration include:
- Blues: "I am mainly concerned with the way of playing. I really like the principle of question and answer, between text and instrument. I sing a line, after which there is room for a musician to respond with a lick or a blow. "
- Dub: "" I don't like reggae, I do like dub. Dub is reggae but with the bass, drums, wind instruments and vocals pulled apart and rebuilt with spring reverbs and band echoes. That's what I wanted with my songs. See how much you can get away without losing the core. I then pulled everything apart and put it back together. "
- The R&B pop of the new millennium: "What is so cool about the pop music of the 2000s are the beats of Timbaland (as in Nelly Furtado's Maneater) and The Neptunes. But also a track like Royals by Lorde, wow. I don't know where it pops out of, but if you give me a floor and a mallet or stick, it will erupt. It's just great to play. "

In some songs we hear a skipping guitar reminiscent of African pop. "I wouldn't say that myself so quickly. I do listen to Fela Kuti a lot and I also love King Ayisoba. "And yes, Talking Heads or LCD Soundystem, with those deep grooves and loops that keep coming back ..." He must admit that he has a lot of influence.

"There is no cheerful frisking," a reviewer once wrote about Dassuad. Viper Mad sounds a lot more lighter. Uyens would still not call it cheerful. "Then I think of happy. I find it rather encouraging or purifying. Such as a good ending to a dramatic film. That feeling.'

NNM: Viper Mad – First
NNM is a series in which we discuss new music from Dutch artists.

Viper Mad - First (CD, EM Records) Looking in a mirror can be very confronting, but it still provides some new insights or leads. I have always had that feeling with the music of Bjørn Uyens, both in terms of personal experience and how he seems to develop his music. Time and time again he acquaints us with just another indie rock, which opens more and more like a flower, but always fits in perfectly with this professional melancholic. It all started in 1997 with his great band Dress, whose 3 beautiful albums Self-important (2001), The Image Reduction Plan (2003) and The Confort Collector (2009) were released, followed by Dassuad with their album Drive (2013). The last and only feat from this group and Uyens so far, who promises to show a different, more extroverted sound. Uyens always works with excellent (guest) musicians, such as Maarten Kooijman, Jochem Klijnman, Empee Holwerda, Corno Zwetsloot, Ineke Duyvenvoorde, Cees Appeldoorn and Marg Van Eenbergen. A new band has now emerged around Bjørn, listening to the name Viper Mad.
In 2018 Uyens aka Dassuad (vocals, guitar, percussion) founded this band together with his cousin Peter Sprengers aka Peer de Heer (drums). Both have a different musical approach route, but land on the same ground. Uyens has made himself heard with indie rock, whether or not interlaced with post-rock and folk, while Sprengers has gone through the jazz circuit more. That this certainly does not bite each other, is clear from the debut First. The group now also consists of Bob Kuijl (rhodes, vocals) and King Leo (bass, vocals). They present 10 songs, which form a catchy cocktail of indie rock, dub, cool wave, jazz and even afrobeat. It delivers a rock solid and consistent yet varied whole, with various instant classics that you will never let go and crawl deep under your skin. Viper Mad produces an extroverted and at the same time austere sound, enveloped in a wonderfully melancholic and often also nocturnal atmosphere. Uyens' beautifully emotionally charged voice certainly contributes to that. They can count on the support of various guests on vocals, trumpet, guitar, percussion and probably more. The music positions itself in a quirky, modest way somewhere between Fink, Matt Bauer, Flying Horseman, Radiohead and The xx. They could also do it well beyond our country borders. A sultry, compelling and above all beautiful debut!
