The first time Tess van der Zwet heard Jacques Brel, lightning struck. Tess and her band are now hundreds of shows further, they have released a lovingly received EP and Tess was in Paradiso to sing their 2019 summer hit 'Mon Paris'. They do so with an irresistible joie de vivre and the balls to play the uncastrated version of chansons: it can be modest and beautiful, but it can also be ugly, grotesque. And time and again the primal forces of the chanson appear to possess a throat grabbing magnetism: singing along, tears in the eyes and blissful heads across the full width. Tess Merlot on stage is an emotional rollercoaster that always ends in an exuberant party, with all masks off.
