It is a composition in which the duality of man comes to the fore through improvisation versus composition, minor versus major, abstract/tonal, but in which those two sides also form a synthesis in an idiosyncratic musical universe. A musical contemplation about the destructive side of man and also an ode to his resilience.

The Matangi Quartet has been a leader in Dutch musical life for almost two decades with the most diverse projects and collaborations. The musicians have already joined forces for various dance, theater and television productions and Wolfert Brederode composed the work 'Shadowchild', which appeared on Matangi's album Jazzics. With Ruins & Remains, the long-cherished wish to jointly perform an accessible but also enigmatic concert program on the Dutch and international stages.
