In addition to this impressive cantata, the program includes cantatas and sonatas by Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) and Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767), contemporaries of Bach.
It is well known that Buxtehude was a great example for Bach. Not too much is known about Bach's life, but it is certain that at a young age he was willing to walk from Arnstadt to Lübeck – a distance of almost 500 kilometers! — to hear the old master play there. This evening's program includes the Trio Sonata in A minor, a work that undoubtedly appealed to Bach.
The other contemporary and contemporary and good friend of Bach who is put in the spotlight is Telemann: for a long time often dismissed as an average writer, but has since been completely rehabilitated. The 2017 Telemann year undoubtedly contributed to this. Telemann was considered one of the greatest in his time and anyone who takes the trouble to listen to his music will understand why. For example, the cantata 'Ich will den Kreuzweg gerne gehen', which will be performed this evening, is a beautiful 'passion cantata' in which the violin portrays the text and enhances the affect, especially in the moving aria 'Ich küsse die Rute'.
