Philip Catherine (London 1942) is considered one of the most romantic and melodic guitarists in jazz. Alongside Toots Thielemans, he is regarded as the most important Belgian jazz musician. In 1985 he performed together with Chet Baker and bassist Jean-Louis Rasinfosse in Porgy en Bess during the Scheldt Jazz Festival, one of the most memorable jazz concerts in Porgy ever.

He started playing the guitar at a very young age after he discovered Georges Brassens and Django Reinhardt. Early on in his career, he played with greatness Charles Mingus who nicknamed him Young Django. In 1971 Jean-Luc Ponty asked him to join his quintet.

He played on the major stages, the Berliner Philharmonie, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Olympia and the Salle Pleyel in Paris and the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. But he also enjoys playing in atmospheric jazz clubs because he is close to his audience.

Philip received many prestigious awards such as the Bird Award (1990) together with Stan Getz at the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Django D'Or (1998) in Paris for "Best European Jazz Artist". Maestro Honoris Causa” from the Antwerp Conservatory, other laureates were Jos van Immerseel, Sigiswald Kuyken and Toots Thielemans.

He made memorable albums including his first live recording “Live” on the Dreyfus label with Bert van den Brink and Hein Van de Geyn, among others.

Bert van den Brink (1958) is perhaps one of the most versatile musicians in the Netherlands. He graduated cum laude as a classical pianist at the Utrecht conservatory and immediately started teaching jazz piano at the same conservatory.

On his website he is listed as a pianist, accordionist, organist, arranger, producer, composer, teacher and he excels in all those disciplines. In 2007 Bert received the VPRO/Boy Edgar Prize, the most important award in the Netherlands for jazz musicians. Bassist Hein Van de Geyn lured him as musical director of singer Dee Dee Bridgewater and he held the same position with Denise Jannah. But he also worked with opera singer Miranda van Kralingen and he has been working for a long time with baritone Thomas Oliemans with music by Schubert (CD Winterreise), Harry Bannink, Jacques Brel, among others. He was the regular pianist of Toots Thielemans for a while, together with Hein van de Geyn and Hans van Oosterhout.

Very special are the daily miniatures, Berts Bytes, which he presents on his website. Very nice improvisations that are created on the spot.

Improvising together on jazz standards and own compositions with Philip Catherine is pure pleasure for both of them. They take such great pleasure in digging deep into all the possibilities that they discover while playing that the pleasure is just splashing out. Can not be missed!!!
