Performance in the series Esprit Français
At the Groupe des Six, the group of anti-romantic French composers who pursued transparency and classical simplicity, Claude Debussy's impressionist music was seen in a suspicious light. Even so, the young Poulenc, one of those six composers, admired him immensely. Darius Milhaud was Poulenc's older colleague and friend within the group and should not be missing from this program, nor is the spiritual father of the movement, Erik Satie.
After their dinner together on Saturday evening, 'les Six' often went to the café where composer and pianist Jean Wiéner played jazz. For Wiéner, there were no substantial differences between classical and more popular music, nor did he recognize a difference in value between "high" and "low" music. Wiéner therefore also belongs to Poulenc's musical inner circle.
